hi I'm TOA McKinney the principal here at midseason Prescott and there's so many reasons why our school is unique a really cool fact about our school it's like in the absolute center of La we're like at the very top I love the community of the school I like how it's really small you can know all the families I love that it's an open campus I love that you come and it kind of almost feels like a college quad where you know you see all the students from all different grade levels here hanging out all the kids know all the other teachers names they have friends in other classes or siblings or their siblings friends so it's nice to see them you know say hi to each other I think more than anything it's a family and I tell everybody that I meet that it's a family it's a small school and everybody works together as a team to make sure that the kids most importantly the kids are learning something new right we have a very diverse group of students who attend our school they're very active they're Lively they love meeting new people they love having wonderful conversations with 1 another and they get along very well with their teachers and other peers when we first came onto this campus and walked around uh with the principal to see what was what was here I was blown away by The Greenery I like the grass because it has so much flour for the spring I really love the greenery around the school we have a tree that's like a 100 years old that's protected the history is very intriguing it's a little bit more unique of a compass this used to be an orphanage many many many many many many many years ago it's gone through many iterations and we also know that Ron Prescott is who we named our school after he actually formed the first Magnet School in LAUSD it was like different than any other school I've seen I was used to a lot more cement a lot more you know having to put planters out here we have trees everywhere we have green everywhere we now have a beautiful um Native California plant garden and when we drive up the hill that's what we get to see in the morning and I walk around I would probably but look this for squirrels because there's always squirrels somewhere in this part the kids have and then there's another area that you can have your like that's a little beautiful little break that they get to have in the day when they get to go out and do their Garden class and their hands are in the dirt and they're learning where their food comes from and they're seeing it grow over time and then they get to go out and pick it it's amazing and then like just be yourself express yourself as a plant cuz you know they have lives they have feelings too there's California puppies we're going corn we're going squash butternut squash juicy an abundant of greenery we have a micro Forest over here we're not always in the classroom there's gardening and music we are a magnet school uh that focuses on Sciences but we also have a very diverse community so with that comes students that are diverse and have different interests so there's all of these different auxiliary courses that help them to expand and learn in different ways so I think that's what also creates a Buy in with the kids good Amelia my favorite guessing about my teacher is that she's kind and she's and she's helpful well they have some of the nicest teachers I'm going to say that the teachers here give their all every day I've personally seen teachers interact with 1 another by taking the initiative to go and support another new teacher they support them with creating their lesson plans preparing their classrooms and just getting ready to serve their students on a day-to-day basis this is 1 of the most collaborative steps that I've ever been a part of I think teachers are really will willing to jump in and give their ideas and share resources with 1 another which I really appreciate I think the kids like that it's a small environment is cozy and the teachers are very personable I love the teachers they're just so kind and hearing and when you're like feeling down they just yeah I like class because it's like real colorful yeah it has a lot of positive energy um a lot of parents also feel comfortable uh to talk to teachers who are not their kids teachers at the moment I know so many different families even if the kids are not all my classrooms now and once again that comes from the energy that the teachers are given a lot of these schools that can feel like every teacher is in Ireland but I feel like it's really a team here here we're very close as a staff and teacher and administration and we really love the parent involvement so parents see that as a sense of we belong and we want to give as much as we can what parents are very very knowledgeable of what the needs are for the students and they come in and they're very proactive I'm very impressed on how our parents show up every day to support the principal as well as the teachers we were delighted to have a wonderful Community a beautiful group parents having the PTO has allowed like the parents to become friends exactly yeah it's really nice we just pop into the parent Center whenever you want it's just like a very welcoming campus so it's just a really nice to have that community when you come to the event here at Mid City you really feel like you're a part of the school I've never been at a campus where there was open space during all of our events like that Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History Month Festival the kids get to watch each other there and cheer each other on my high level for the year for this past year was the Halloween part I love how everything was so detailed you know it was meant for the kids like everybody participated I really like that but for the kids it is such a beautiful Gathering it's like a reunion of sorts right like when we get together with the family you get together with our our school family at these events it's what brings us together and that's what I love the most about this school is that we really as parents of the PTO as staff and teachers who really work together to bring that that fun and that joy and it's all about teamwork because it's all about the kids for me it's the quality of Education the small class sizes it's very very important um and also just to support um I I really do feel supported by the staff here as well there's so many layers to this little school it's very complex but it's beautifully complex and I love that about this city we have only 5 grade levels here first that's great and it makes it a very small community feel for students we also feed into secondary school called laces they get to be with their friends not here just for years but transition over to the next milestone for next 7 years also so they become a family you can apply through LAUSD on a website with each horses I push the students to come to school every day and know that our School Creed is every minute counts and teachers reiterate that same statement to students every day so that everyone pushes every student here every day to be their best so come on over we want to invite you to be a part of our family here at Mid Cities Prescott
