OVERVIEW

Mid-City's Prescott School of Enriched Sciences Magnet, home of the Mountain Lions, is a 1st-5th Grade magnet elementary ITI practitioner school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. We are one of the first four magnets formed in LAUSD as a School of Enriched Sciences Magnet with a thematic focus on the Biosphere. Our school has gone through several variations as a K-12, K-8 and now 1-5 grade elementary school. The current configuration is the result of a $3,000,000 2010-2013 U.S. Department of Education grant to create a learning environment for the future scientists and mathematicians of the world.

Located in the historic West Adams district, our campus has a rich history. Our school is located on a beautiful and charming campus with an edible garden and outdoor classroom, mature trees, microforest, a pollinator-attracting California native plant garden, and a grassy quad where the majority of our events are held.

Our small school population contributes to an intimate learning environment through the lens of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) where staff knows every child’s name. Our student body comprises approximately 200 children with two classes per grade served by a faculty of ten classroom practitioners. Each grade shares an Educational Aide or a Teacher's Aide to support our scholars and classroom practitioners' academic programs.

We view our school site as a living laboratory where students have access to usable information and data to connect our academic goals seamlessly to real world experiences. In addition to our classroom instruction, we partner with community entities to enhance our science and arts activities. In fall 2023, we planted our native plant microforest, the first at any school in Los Angeles, with the support of SuGi and Seed to Landscape. Enrich LA offers our scholars first-hand experiences to learn about our campus biome and impact on the environment with our edible garden, pollinator garden, and composting program in an outdoor classroom space. In 2023, with the support of ReDiscover Center, we established a makerspace in our library where students can create projects using scrap material.

As the arts encourages creative thinking and exploration, our music and drama teachers provide inventive opportunities for our scholars to create and perform, and our school psychologist hosts a "Mindfulness Wednesdays" weekly club to promote social emotional learning through activities such as yoga and arts practice. In the 2022-2023, LAUSD's Cultural Arts Passport funding allowed us to go on school-wide field trips to Inner City Arts, and brought drum circle musicians, dancers, and painting lessons to our campus.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a community partner at LAUSD schools in the Mid-City area, hosting the "Healthy Habits." program, a series of virtual and in-person workshops and educational resources for both students and families advocating health and nutrition, exercise, and health screenings.

As a magnet school, eligible students can attend our school with transportation provided by bus.

Mid-City's Prescott is part of Local District West in the Fairfax Community of Schools.
